Why Train for Beach Volleyball

  • It's a fun, lifetime sport.

  • Improve indoor
Beach volleyball players are not specialists, they learn all the skills of volleyball. With only two players per team, you are touching the ball all the time. More touches equals improved skills. Beach volleyball skills transfer well to the indoor game. Beach volleyball guru John Kessel of USA Volleyball says, "The beach game is GREAT for improving your indoor skills/game. Whatever your weaknesses are, you get to work on them a ton. Unlike the 6-person game, you touch the ball in every rally, and with just two of you covering the court, you learn to read and anticipate much better. Dealing with the sun and wind helps you be more adaptable. Player height is less important outdoors where ball control and skill is more important."

  • Widen possibilities for collegiate play
Beach Volleyball is now an NCAA sport for women. The first NCAA Championship tournament was held in 2016. Currently there are over 60 colleges with Women's Beach Volleyball programs, and the list is growing every year. (list of college programs)

Training is organized in three-month sessions.

Practices are offered four days a week, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, but times can vary due to sunlight. Practices take place Monday through Thursday, and players choose each week which two days they will attend. This does not have to be determined in advance.

Players do not have to have a partner to participate in beach training.

Sessions will take place even if it is raining or windy.

*Summer session:
Begins April 26th and ends July 30th. Athletes will have 27 training days.

Practices will be 4:00-6:00 PM April-June. July practice times will be 5-7pm.

Drop-In Practices

Players can "drop-in" for a single practice session any time.

Three-month Session: $800
Drop-In: $35 each time
Players can start at any time during the three-month period (the cost will be pro-rated).

Grossmont College

Parking is available in lot #3 and costs $2 for the day. Parking permits can be obtained at the blue kiosk. Do not park in yellow line spaces, they are reserved for staff, you will be ticketed even if you have a permit. Players can be dropped off and picked up at lot #3 at no cost.

What to Bring

When attending practices or a tournament, there are a number of important things to bring with you:
  • Water. Lots of water
  • Sports drink and snacks
  • Sunglasses
  • Visor or baseball cap (you will quickly get used to it)
  • Sunscreen
  • Towel
  • Warm sports clothing; sweatshirt, sweatpants, etc. It can get cold quickly when the sun gets low or clouds come in

Epic does not put teams together for tournaments, players decide who to play with and then register themselves for tournaments (Epic does not handle this). Parents are responsible for tournament entry fees, travel, etc. Memberships may be required for tournament play.

There are many tournaments available to play in, both in San Diego and further north up the coast.

California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) tournaments are usually the largest and in San Diego they usually take place at Ocean Beach.

Age Divisions

CBVA, AAU & USA Junior Beach Tour all have the same cutoff date – September 1st. It’s the same as indoor. For 2017, this means:
